More spray tanning articles. Article 1: Take Your Children For a Spray Tan! By Boshena Warzecha Have you ever tried to get your teenage son or daughter to stop sun tanning, only to realize after several months/years, that you will not win with peer pressure? The look of a suntanned body is "in" more than ever, and the tanning industry is one of the fastest growing beauty sectors. Do we have to see our children sacrifice their health for sake of fashion? Not necessarily. Working in a tanning industry, I am watching a growing trend: parents are bringing in their children for a spray tan. Some as young as 11. Is this a case of vanity? Maybe, but as one of those mothers explained to me: "I had a death in the family because of the skin cancer, and myself, I had few cancerous spots removed. I know the danger, and I am not prepared to risk my daughter getting sick or dying. I am teaching her right habits so that she fits in with her friends, but takes care of herself at the same time." Suddenly, it did not sound so vain any more. After all, I feel that my first duty as a mother is to keep my children safe. I make sure that I teach them how to cross the road and eat healthy foods, why not teach them how to avoid melanoma? Sure, it can be a little bit expensive, but so are braces! And the result, if they learn the lesson, will not only ensure that they stay healthy, but also as an added benefit will give them a beautiful skin for the rest of their lives. It might be worth it, after all. Boshena is an owner of TanXtreme, a spray tanning salon in Byron Bay Australia. What the... By Boshena Warzecha For months now I’ve had a steady stream of tanners coming into my spray tanning salon and leaving 10 minutes later with the colour of their skin in no way different from the one that they came in with. Yet, they come again and again. Why, do you ask, would anybody want a colorless spray tan? Isn’t it totally contrary to what the whole exercise is supposed to be about? Welcome to the new era in spray tanning! The newest thing on the market that is gaining more and more followers is spray tanning with a colorless (clear) spray tanning solution. Once you’ve had it, it is hard to go back to the old solution containing bronzer. For years bronzer has been added to the spray tanning solution for 2 reasons: 1) For immediate gratification, so that immediately after the session it would appear that you just came back from holidays, 2) To ensure that you got even tan. The person spray tanning you had to know if she did not miss any parts of your body. The brown dye in the solution could show her exactly where she had been. People that spray tan frequently know that until now you had to pay for those few days of golden skin with at least one day of discomfort. When bronzer is added to the spray tanning solution, it is responsible for myriad of problems: • There are often streaks. Sure, most of it comes out in the first shower, but until then you run around with what looks like a map of a river running down the back of your legs. A dead give away that you just had a spray tan. • You can get dark stains, especially on your hands and feet. Those are almost impossible to remove in a hurry. • The brown dye gets onto your clothes and underwear. Once again, most of it comes off in the wash, but if you try to wear your good satin or silk bra, the only place for it, after the encounter with a bronzer will be in the rubbish bin. • If you have large pores on your face you will end up with a “blackhead effect”. The bronzer will lodge in those pores, and it will take days for it to come out. Very unattractive. The same will happen if you shave or wax your legs. You will have spotty legs for a week. • Because the bronzer lodges itself so deep in the pores, it can keep coming out for days on end onto your sheets, and towels. Also on the white clothes if you happen to sweat (no bride would sweat in her wedding dress, right?) And what if spray tanning solution has no added bronzer? Well, the problems described above simply don’t exist. You get sprayed, and your own skin develops the colour. Full stop. The only drawback of being sprayed with a clear spray tanning solution is that you will have to wait for your tan about 5-7 hours. Oh, and another thing, you will probably have to get your tan done in a spray tan booth. The reason for it is that most of technicians that do spray tans with a hand held unit simply cannot do a good job without the bronzer. So the way to spray tan these days is to hop into a spray tan booth, 1 minute later wipe yourself down , put your clothes on, and be on your way. Unless of course you like to stand completely naked for 20 minutes or so in front of a complete stranger while being spray tanned and getting streaks, blackheads and stains. The choice is clear. Be Careful.. Be Very Very Careful... By Boshena Warzecha Your wedding day is one of the most important days in your life. When you definitely want to look your best. How would you feel, if that special occasion was spoiled by your skin showing lots of ugly brown patches, or worse still, if you woke up on a day of your wedding, looked in the mirror and discovered that you have turned into an orange pumpkin? What a terrifying thought! But quite possible. And yet, whenever you go on any wedding forum you will discover that many brides-to-be contemplate having THEIR VERY FIRST SPRAY TAN on the eve of their wedding day! THAT IS JUST NOT THE WAY TO GO ABOUT IT! (Sorry for shouting, but I have seen few spray tanning disasters that would make a bride’s skin crawl). The fact is, spray tanning solution is just a cosmetic, and as ANY cosmetic it might be compatible with your skin, or it might not! The SAFEST way to get a great spray tan for your wedding is to: 1. Find a salon/technician that uses Clear spray tanning solution, or a solution with very little bronzer (that way the bronzer will not get into your pores, and stain your wedding dress). 2. Learn how to prepare before your spray tan, so that spray tan will have a best chance to come out even. 3. Have the lightest possible tan. Do not go for the “Bahamas holiday” variety, get “just a glow”. 4. For goodness sake, have a trial run! Especially, if you’ve never had a spray tan before. This way you will see how your skin reacts to the solution, and what precaution you will have to take (eg more barrier cream on dry ankles) to make the tan perfect next time. 5. Have a trial run in the same salon that you will have a spray tan for your wedding. If you are having your wedding away from your home town, give a ring around in the town where your wedding will take place and find out what solution they use. Then find the same one in your home town, and try it out. 6. At the time of your trial spray tan, buy a bottle of a touch up solution and learn how to use it correctly. 7. Take special care of your hands and feet. They will be on show at your wedding, so it’s better to apply more barrier cream before spray tan, and then touch them up if necessary rather than finish up with brown stains. 8. Learn how to take care of your tan afterwards with tan extending and moisturising products, so that your perfect tan will last longer than your wedding night. Is it possible to get a great spray tan for your wedding? Is it worth all the extra bother? Will it create enough visible results to justify the cost? YES,YES and YES! A good spray tan will give you a wonderful glow that will make your eyes sparkle, your hair shine, and will give you the brightest smile ever. And how will that special lingerie look on a body that is tanned all over? Spray tan for your wedding? What a fantastic idea……………as long as you do it right. Article 4: What is the real price of a spray tan? by Boshena Warzecha Looking tanned is such a great feeling, isn’t it? There are three methods of getting that feeling. 1.Getting out into the sun. Great if you are young, and believe that all this hype about skin cancer has nothing to do with you. Goes hand in hand with high alcohol consumption, speeding and living on credit. It will catch up with you sooner than you think. 2.Solarium. Possibly a little more sensible solution if you take it easy, and build up your tan very gradually. Might lower your chances of getting skin cancer if you never burn, but if you tan regularly, it will definitely not save you from real bad skin damage and broken capillaries (very high temperatures boil blood in your capillaries- yuk). 3.Spray tan. A relative newcomer. It can take less than one minute to apply (in a booth), does not damage your skin in any way and saves you hours and hours on trips to and from solariums or lying on the beach. Spray tanning seems to be such a great solution, so why doesn’t everybody, who wants a tanned look, do it? Judging from the reactions that I encounter at my salon, it seems mainly to be the cost. A single session can cost up to $70 in some places, the average being about $50. Isn’t it cheaper to go to the beach? If you are asking this question, chances are, you are still very young. Look at your mum. She is probably spending hundreds, and hundreds of dollars per year trying to reverse the damage of frying on the beach in her youth. Unfortunately, our generation was told that getting suntan was healthy (whom can we sue for those lies?). She also has to watch her skin very closely to make sure that she catches any cancerous changes early. Solariums- a cheaper alternative?Apart from also causing serious skin damage long term, how much does it cost in money terms? A single session is on average about $15, so lets see: To build up your tan safely: about 5 sessions, then two sessions per week to keep your tan that way. First month: 9 sessions (5 to build up the tan+ 4 to maintain the tan) at $15 each= $135.Subsequent months (8 sessions) =$120per month What about spray tan?The beauty of this method is that if you spray tan regularly the skin gets used to the solution and then holds the tan much longer. You will need about 3 sessions 5 days apart to get your skin to this stage (but you will be wonderfully brown right after the very first session), after which (if you supplement your spray tan with tan extending products) you will only need a spray tanning session about every 2 weeks. First month: 4 sessions (3 to get your skin used to the solution+ 1 to maintain the tan) at $50 each= $200Subsequent months (2 sessions) =$100per month So, after higher initial cost you will start saving money and definitely lots of time on trips to the salon. Of course down the track you will save yourself thousands and thousands of dollars on skin care products repairing sun damage. Additionally, you will have a very low chance of developing skin cancer. The above prices are a guide only, different salons will have different charges, but almost every salon will have packages, where you can save even more. If spray tanning not only gives you a great tan, saves you from skin damage and cancer, but is also cheaper compared to other methods, does it not make sense to switch over ? Go on. Do your skin a favour, and try spray tanning. What "would do" at other times is just not good enough at those moments. That is why if you are getting married, going to a prom or have other, very important function, the expectation on your spray tan to turn out great will also be very high. There are few steps that you need to take to make sure that a bad spray tan will not spoil your day: 1. If you've never had a spray tan before, make sure that you have a trial few weeks before the occasion. You do not know how your skin will react to the solution. Although chancesof going orange are very remote, how would you feel if it happen on the day of your wedding or prom? Scary! 2. Stay away from the dark tan. Get the lightest shade possible. You want the focus to be on you and that special dress. The tan should be invisible, adding just a "glow". 3. If you are wearing white, or very light coloured dress, find a salon where they have very little or no bronzer in the solution. In a lot of people the bronzer will get into the pores and when they sweat, it will stain the dress, sometimes permanently. 4. Take extra care in your preparation before the tan. Exfoliate very well with the proper products, and apply barrier cream all over your hands and feet before spray tanning. 5. Buy a touch up solution and a tan extender and learn how to use them to repair and prolong your tan way ahead of the occasion. Believe me, on the days immediately before your wedding, and straight after, you will have other things on your mind rather then learning new skills. 6.Make sure that you have your spray tan done in the same salon, by the same technician (if you are having it airbrushed, and not in a booth) and using the same solution as duringyour trial (if you liked it, of course). 7. If your trial did not turn out as great as you expected, try a different salon, using different solution. It's like with any cosmetic; if one does not suit your skin, just look for the one that will. A spray tan for wedding, prom or any other special occasion is a wonderful idea if you learn how to do it right. It will make your hair shine, eyes sparkle and give you the mostbrilliant smile. The cost and effort is very small compared to the fabulous benefits. Yet, not only are beaches as popular as ever, but there is also a steady growth in number of solarium salons. Even after all the education about dangers of tanning, for a lot of people a quick “fix” of a bronzed body outweighs the risks of a long term damage. They think that it will take “forever” before any problems are visible. How long does it take, really? Working in a tanning industry I have seen first hand the damage that sun and solarium beds do to people. First, little freckles and skin discolorations appear. Then, the skin starts to loose its elasticity. It happens so slowly, that most do not notice it. Yet, when you see two people of the same age side by side, one that tans frequently, and the other one not at all, the difference is striking. And it is already apparent in girls in their mid-late 20s and early thirties. In fact, if you tan regularly, at the age of 30 you will have the skin of a 40 year old woman that does not tan. By the time you are in your mid 30s, you will have loose skin all over your body. As the elastin fibres break down, the texture of skin becomes thinner, and wrinkles and creases appear. You will also get large “age spots” and broken capillaries, where the blood has boiled from the heat of sun or solarium. And it only gets worse from then on. What is your chance of getting of all those results if you sun or solarium tan regularly? 100% What can you do to reverse this damage when you are older? Not enough. You can repair the surface of the skin to look more pleasing to the eye, but nothing will repair the elastin fibres deep down in the skin that have been damaged irrevocably. The only way is for plastic surgeon to tighten the skin, but it will cost a small fortune for your whole body to be done. Does it all mean we should stay white and pasty all our lives? Not at all! These days salon spray tanning as well as self tanning products are readily available, effective and very affordable.Sure, you might need some experimenting to find the best product for you, but once you find the right method and product, it is well worth it.Salon spray tanning is not only very quick (especially in the booth), but also cheaper than solarium (see www.best-spray-tan-guide.com for price breakdown). If you are prepared to put in a little bit of effort and learn how to tan with self tanning products, you not only will get a totally natural looking tan, but it will cost you less than bus fare to the beach. And the best thing of all?Your skin will stay young, tight, blemish and wrinkle free well into your advanced years without expensive cosmetics, lasers and plastic surgery. So, what does a smart girl do if she wants to have a great tan, but is not willing to sacrifice her skin? SHE FAKE TANS. by Boshena Warzecha
Looking great while pregnant is a norm these days, but while cutting your hair, putting on make up, painting your nails and wearing great clothes will only make you feel good about yourself, getting a tan is a whole new story. There have not been any in depth studies carried out about effects of mother’s tanning on the foetus however; there is sufficient evidence to feel alarmed about some aspects of it. Let’s look at those. Beach tanning: While some limited sun exposure won’t be harmful, the big danger is overheating. There is evidence that excessive temperatures can lead to very serious spinal malformations in the baby such as spina bifida. It is especially important to avoid excessive temperatures during the first trimester (I guess it eliminates saunas as well). In later stages of pregnancy dehydration can increase risk of premature labour. Additionally, pregnancy makes your skin more sensitive to the sun, so it can increase your chance of rashes and chloasma (dark patches on the face that often accompany pregnancy). Sun beds: Sun beds have the same effect as the sun – they increase body temperature and can lead to overheating and dehydration. Except they can do it on much deeper level, so carry even higher risk. Such concentrated radiation in short amount of time can break down folate much quicker and put the baby in danger of different neural tube defects (such as spina bifida) or premature labour. Fake tanning:Apart from ”dirty little secret” of fake tanning industry this is said to be the only real option open to an expectant mother. However, it is recommended that if spray tanning, avoid contact with the mucous membranes i.e. wear nose plugs and panties, also keep your eyes closed or wear goggles. You see, although spray tanning solution is advertised to be “safe” on the skin, we do not know what it will do on the inside. Applying self tanners where there is no danger of inhaling might be a much better solution during pregnancy. Before you do that however, read about ”dirty little secret of the fake tanning industry” In conclusion – There is enough evidence to believe that sun tanning and sun beds can cause huge damage to your unborn child. The first trimester seems to be the most at risk, but as the pregnancy progresses I imagine that you will find it increasingly uncomfortable to stay out in a hot sun or solarium anyway. That really rules UV tanning out. When it comes to fake tanning, which is publicised as the only “safe” alternative, be careful. Do not let the solution come in contact with any of your mucous membranes. My personal recommendation would be to at least abstain from fake tanning during the first trimester as well. There is so much work with a healthy baby, its better to eliminate any danger of things going wrong. It is very small sacrifice for a lifetime of joy, don’t you think? Article 8: Some straight talk about spray tanning and your sex life.
Many people spray tan only for important occasions. A prom, wedding, special night out, to look great in a new bikini at the start of a season…… In another words, they mainly use spray tan to look good to other people. But there is another use of a spray tan. When there is no special occasion to go to, when there is no stunning dress to put on and when there are no other people to admire it. If you are feeling down, fat (most of us have days like that), have nothing to wear (although the wardrobe is full of clothes) and nobody told you for some time that you are beautiful, go for a spray tan just for you. It only takes about half an hour and in that time you are changed from a gray mouse into a glowing beauty. You are suddenly slimmer, taller, your skin glows, your eyes sparkle, your cellulite disappears and you are beginning to feel good about yourself. Suddenly you look great in the clothes that have been sitting in the closet for ages, and you can take hours trying on all the different combinations. All at once people are paying you more attention. Is it because you have changed so much physically? Not at all. If you ask a man in your life what has changed about you, chances are that he will not be able to tell you. It is not that you look different. It is because you FEEL different, and people pick up on your changed attitude. There is nothing more attractive than a woman who loves who she is and loves her body. Those vibes also make you irresistibly sexy. And when you would lay on top of the covers so that you can admire your evenly tanned nude body rather than cover up with your oldest, ugliest, most comfortable night gown believe me, your man will notice. So, go get a spray tan. Not for anybody else, just for yourself. It will make you feel beautiful and your sex life will get a kick start. Are you confused with Sun Tan versus Spray Tan controversy?.
There seems to be a lot of debates lately about if sun is good for you or not. Some people say that we need to sun tan to produce vitamin D which our body needs and some others worn us about risks of skin cancer. Whom should we listen to? Let’s forget about all the hype for a moment and think about it logically.Believe it or not, there is a really good reason why people have different skin colors. It all comes down to geography. Originally, people who lived in cold climates where there is not much sun, evolved to have white skin, and people who lived closer to equator where sun is plentiful developed darker skin. Why is that so? Human body cannot produce vitamin D. It needs to get it from outside resources. Nature, in its infinite wisdom designed us in such a way that people who have white skin absorb sun’s rays much quicker than people with dark skin. That means that white skinned people need to be in sunlight for a very short time to produce enough vitamin D to fulfill their body’s needs. With people that lived in the area where there was an oversupply of sunshine Nature did not have to enhance their vitamin D absorption mechanisms, but it had to protect them from too much exposure. So, dark skin was developed which has excellent protection qualities, but is lousy on vitamin D absorption. Consequently, dark skinned people have to spend considerably more time in full sunshine to fulfill their daily quote. White people who spend a lot of time in the sun try to cheat nature into giving them something that they were not designed to have – a brown skin. Nature is very adaptable (otherwise there would be no evolution), so it tries to accommodate this “change of climate”, and lets us tan. But many people are not happy with light golden skin sometimes. They want to have dark brown skin all the time. Are you one of them? If you persist, your body will do it’s best to adapt, but:a) there will be consequences (sun damage) and b) the point will come where it will start breaking down (skin cancer). So, what does it mean when it comes to sunlight and our skin? The whiter you are the less time in the sun you need to get your vitamin D (10-20 minutes daily in the shade for very white skinned individuals). Do not try to cheat by using sun beds, because sun beds produce even stronger rays than sun, so cause more damage. Instead - work with your skin and if you want to be brown get a spray tan for goodness sake. And always, always wear a sunscreen. If you have olive skin: 20-30 minutes in the sun every day is great (avoid times 10am and 2pm) and after that wear a sunscreen. You will probably go dark brown really quickly anyway to the envy of all your white friends. If you are a lucky owner of already dark skin, you don’t have to worry much about all that “to sun, or not to sun” hype. Just be sensible. If you are planning to spend a long time in the sun, make sure you wear sunscreen, because even dark skinned people can get skin cancer. Your job however, is to make sure that you do spend a fair amount of your time outdoors (about 1 hour a day would do nicely) and if you don’t, it might be a good idea to take supplements. So, the question of “to suntan or not to suntan” is not a difficult one after all. It all comes down to what skin color you have to start with.
