Applying self tanner to hands

Question: So, I had great luck last summer with an OTC tanner. However, I never quite got the right approach to making the backs of my hands a fingers tan. Then best attempt was I applied the tanner everywhere but my hands. Then I washed and exfoliated my hands and applied the tanner with a cotton ball so I could cover my hands in a way that looked like they were sun kissed.

Any other helpful hints???
